My first try at using Sculpey. Based on Ardman Animations Shaun the Sheep. It's a funny show. I've to say my original idea was for a bigger model (twice as big), but who was I kidding? I know nothing of this sculpting business. So I scrapped that and went for a more manageable small size, which was equally challenging. The last image shows the screen grab from the show and my crappy concept doodle.

I made this to test the latest COLORS! update for the Nintendo DS. The best part about it is its ability to export the image to a larger size. Clicking on the image above it will show you what a medium size is like. The largest size export would be a whooping 1536 x 2048!! Nintendo DS is the best digital (+ portable) sketchbook ever! Needless to say I am lacking the skills that master painters like Jim, Ian, Ryan , Cory, Pat... well the list goes on and on, but you get the point. I hope to be like them some day. Ha!

Playing around with some hues. I downloaded lots of PS free brushes the other day, now I'm trying them out on a couple of doodles I posted previously. I'm no expert with colors or brushes, most of these brushes I used more like stamps rather than brushes (brush strokes).

Lately I've been watching a lot of Showtime's original series Dexter, almost done with Season 1. Pretty cool show. I noticed Dexter's sister Detective Debra Morgan (played by Jennifer Carpenter) looks like a comic book's stereotypical female character. More specifically... I'd say the character Detective Debra Morgan is the incarnation of an Adam Hughes female drawing. I made this sketch last night while watching the show, but it does not make her any justice... ha!

This are sketches I did for my entry to the June 2009 11 Second Club online competition. The 3D mesh is the Norman rig (By: Leif Jeffers, Morgan Loomis, Peter Starostin, Neal Thibodeaux). The original idea I had was to do the Joker in the Batcave, after a week of work on that I switched to the Hitler in Heaven idea because I thought it fit the sound bite better.

At the end I had to swap Hitler for the Joker and remove my sound bite edits to adhere to the competition rules. Which I think worked OK, but not as well as having Hitler in it. See both versions in the animation page of this blog.

I got inspired by Ian's works so I grabbed my Nintendo DS with the R4 plugged in and fired up Colors! to do this little painting. Um, i should say... attempt at a painting. While I sat at my desk I just looked in front of me and started to paint. It was a pretty fun. Now if I could only be as good as the rest of you... yeah~

Takedown

This is a storyboard I made for a "Takedown" move (later discarded for lack of time) for the exclusive Sony Playstation 3 title Lair developed at Factor 5 . While in development we called them "Killing Moves", at the time the game was aming for a Mature rating. There was lots of gratuitous blood in all of these God-Of-War-style sequences. The game also featured a move to defeat the rhinos on the ground by beheading them via a Mortal-Kombat-style-head-ripping action. In any case... all of that went away when the decision to change the Mature rating for a Teen rating came from the ranks above.

OMG! A sketch I made ended up in a published book!! SWEET!! Too bad no one knew it was my work… DOH!! The book in question is Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts . The work pictured above can be seen on pages 110, 111 and 137. The pencil sketches were done for the project Justice Unlimited which was the second project I worked on at LucasArts Entertainment , the first one being Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi (Yeah, the Star Wars fighting game). These were done in 1997. I got to do a few character concept sketches while the team was waiting for Cory to wrap-up his work on Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi . Our biggest source of inspiration was the works of Jack Kirby . The color sketch I did for Star Wars: Jedi Power Battles in 1998 if I am not mistaken. At the time we had a small window of oportunity in which all of us animators were drawing concept sketches to inspire the Level Designers. In the book, the text for the SW:JPB image reads as follow:

Giant lizards?? What the...!? Those are not “Giant Lizards”, those are two perfectly healthy Dewbacks . Even though I did not stamp my signature on any of these, I did managed to sneak my name on the actual art... kind of an Easter Egg. The image below shows the spot where I left my last name on Rasa Nihil’s scarf:

Last but not least… if you happen to come across this book check out super animator Yuhon Ng’s pen sketch on page 139: Guybrush and Elaine about to kiss, very nice ~ done for Escape From Monkey Island . Man, I feel honored to be part of that book. Good times back then, good times!

PS-> I'm gonna have to get a booth at the San Diego Comic-Con International and start to sign books, give autographs to all the fans, etc... HA! WOO!!
